Wang Xiangxi, China's Minister of Emergency Management, is facing a probe from the country's anti-graft watchdog, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI). The investigation, announced on January 30, 2026, alleges "serious violations of discipline and law," a phrase commonly used in China to denote corruption or abuse of power.
Wang, 63, who has held his position since July 2022, previously served as chairman of the National Energy Investment Corp. His investigation marks a significant moment, as it is relatively rare for a sitting minister to face such scrutiny. The CCDI did not provide further details regarding the precise nature of the allegations against him.
This latest investigation comes on the heels of an intensified anti-corruption campaign launched by President Xi, who has emphasized the necessity of rooting out corruption within the Communist Party. Last week, the ministry of defense also revealed that it is investigating Zhang Youxia, a high-ranking general, indicating that the crackdown extends to senior military officials as well.
Xi remarked earlier this month that the battle against corruption is one that China "must not lose," following a record number of 65 probes into senior officials last year. This campaign has broadened its focus to include academic institutions and former leaders of state-owned enterprises.
In a meeting prior to the announcement, Wang was seen addressing his colleagues, reflecting an ongoing commitment to internal party discipline. Amid these investigations, other significant officials have also faced scrutiny, including Sun Shaocheng, the former Party Secretary of the Inner Mongolia autonomous region.
The surge in investigations signals not just an enforcement of discipline within the Party but also aims to consolidate Xi's power, as those challenging his authority may be removed from their positions. As the anti-corruption efforts expand, experts remain watchful over how these actions might affect both governance and internal cohesion within the Communist Party.
