China Reiterates Readiness to Engage in ‘Candid Dialogue’ with the Philippines

China has reiterated its readiness to engage in what it described as a “candid dialogue” with the Philippines, as both sides continue to navigate tensions in the West Philippine Sea.

In a statement, Chinese officials said Beijing remains open to communication and consultations with Manila to properly manage differences and avoid misunderstandings. The remarks come amid recent diplomatic exchanges and renewed calls for dialogue following incidents involving vessels from both countries in disputed waters.

China emphasized that it prefers resolving disputes through peaceful means and bilateral discussions, while urging the Philippines to return to what it called constructive engagement. Chinese authorities also repeated their position that dialogue and consultation are the appropriate paths to maintaining stability in the region.

For its part, the Philippines has consistently maintained that any talks must be grounded in international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the 2016 arbitral ruling that invalidated China’s expansive claims in the South China Sea. Philippine officials have stressed that dialogue should not come at the expense of the country’s sovereign rights.

The renewed call for “candid dialogue” highlights ongoing diplomatic efforts to ease tensions, even as both nations continue to assert their respective positions. Analysts say sustained communication remains critical in preventing escalation and preserving peace and stability in the West Philippine Sea.
