China accuses Japan of “harassment” during far-seas aircraft carrier training

China accused Japan of “harassing” a Chinese aircraft carrier strike group during Japan- and U.S.-monitored drills in the Pacific, describing Japan’s actions as close-range tracking, surveillance, and “provocative harassment.”

China’s state media reported that the Liaoning carrier flotilla returned to its home port around June 22 after the incident during “far-sea combat training” lasting over 40 days. The Chinese allegation followed Japan’s earlier statements that it conducted vigilance and surveillance in surrounding waters and airspace.

Japan rejected the accusation, calling the claims false. Japan’s Joint Staff said Chinese state media had portrayed the Japan Self-Defense Forces as interfering with or provoking Chinese naval vessels, including the Liaoning carrier group, but that “such claims are not true.” Tokyo said it would continue professional and steady surveillance to ensure Japan’s sovereignty and security, prioritizing safety.

The dispute adds to already tense China–Japan relations, which have increasingly focused on military activity and regional security in the Pacific.
