Chicago, United States— Two people were killed and one was wounded Thursday evening when gunfire erupted in a residential neighborhood on Chicago's South Side.
The shooting happened at 7:20 p.m. on the 7200 block of South Eberhart Avenue in the Grand Crossing neighborhood. Neighbors reported hearing six to eight shots in rapid succession. Then screaming.
Police arrived to find three victims on the front porch of a two-story brick house. A 29-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman were pronounced dead at the scene. Both had multiple gunshot wounds. A 31-year-old man, also shot, was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.
The house was a family home. Residents said the victims were relatives gathered for dinner. No children were inside at the time. The shooter fled on foot before officers arrived. A description was broadcast: male, dark hoodie, black pants.
"This appears to be a targeted incident, not random. The house was the target," a Chicago Police Department commander told reporters at the scene. "We have a person of interest and we are looking at surveillance video from the block."
Grand Crossing has seen a spike in shootings this year. Police data shows 18 homicides in the district since January, up from 11 last year. Residents say gangs and personal disputes drive much of the violence.
Forensic teams marked nine shell casings on the sidewalk and steps. They also recovered a firearm tossed in a trash can two blocks away. It is being tested.
Neighbors gathered behind police tape. Some cried. One woman who lives next door said she heard the victims arguing with someone outside minutes before the shots.
Detectives are interviewing the surviving victim at the hospital. No arrest has been made.
