Holiday seasons are often painted with images of festive gatherings, twinkling lights and long drives to see family and friends. Yet on the roads across Ireland this Christmas and New Year period, that tradition was contrasted by stark figures from law enforcement — hundreds of motorists were taken off the roads for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, highlighting once again the persistent risks associated with impaired driving.

According to An Garda Síochána, during the recent road safety operation that ran from December 1, 2025 to January 5, 2026, 765 people were arrested for driving while under the influence of an intoxicant — a category that includes both alcohol and drugs. Of those, approximately 56 per cent were primarily under the influence of alcohol, while 44 per cent were primarily under the influence of drugs.

These arrests formed part of a major festive roads enforcement campaign involving almost 10,000 checkpoints and widespread testing across the country. Aside from impaired driving, Gardaí also detected nearly 26,500 speeding offences, issued nearly 1,700 fixed charge notices for mobile phone use while driving, and issued over 450 notices for not wearing seatbelts.

Traffic collisions and fatalities remained a serious concern during this period. Gardaí reported 26 deaths on the roads over the Christmas holiday period, along with more than 70 collisions resulting in serious or life‑threatening injuries. The total number of road deaths in 2025 reached 190, up from 175 in the previous year.

Gardaí have emphasized that risky behaviours such as speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving continue to endanger all road users. Chief Superintendent David Harrington urged drivers to avoid distractions, always wear a seatbelt, and commit to sober driving — noting that “100 % of your attention should be on your driving.”

The Christmas and New Year enforcement period serves as a reminder that festive celebrations and road safety are deeply interconnected. While checkpoints and arrests aim to deter dangerous behaviour, authorities stress that preventing harm on the roads ultimately depends on drivers making responsible choices. As Gardaí continue their safety operations into the new year, the message remains clear: driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs not only risks legal consequences but can also have tragic outcomes for individuals and communities alike.
