Characters Unleashed: Disney and OpenAI Forge a New Future in AI Video

Sometimes a quiet shift in the landscape of storytelling becomes a landmark moment — not with the flourish of a new movie premiere, but through a strategic partnership that could reshape how audiences interact with beloved characters. On Thursday, The Walt Disney Company announced it will invest $1 billion in OpenAI and enter a three-year licensing agreement that allows OpenAI’s generative video tool Sora to use Disney’s iconic characters for creating short AI-generated videos, marking a significant step in the entertainment industry’s embrace of artificial intelligence.

Under the deal, Disney will become OpenAI’s first major content licensing partner for Sora, enabling users to generate and share short, user-prompted videos featuring more than 200 characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars — from Mickey Mouse and Cinderella to Iron Man and Darth Vader — beginning in early 2026. The agreement notably excludes the use of actors’ voice recordings or likenesses, focusing only on the animated, illustrated, and creature characters under Disney’s control.

Beyond licensing characters, Disney will also become a major customer of OpenAI’s technology, incorporating OpenAI’s models and APIs into new products, internal tools, and customer experiences — including for Disney+ subscribers and corporate workflows — and deploying ChatGPT across parts of its organization. As part of the investment, Disney will receive warrants to purchase additional OpenAI equity in the future.

Executives from both companies emphasized a shared commitment to responsible AI use that respects creators’ rights and prioritizes user safety. Disney CEO Bob Iger described the agreement as a way to extend storytelling through generative AI while protecting the integrity of its creative works, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman highlighted the partnership as a model for innovation that benefits audiences and creators alike.

The licensing deal also envisions a curated selection of fan-generated Sora videos appearing on Disney+, further blending traditional media distribution with emerging AI-driven creativity. This collaboration comes at a moment when Hollywood studios are navigating evolving norms around AI, content ownership, and creator protections.

As generative AI continues to evolve, Disney’s $1 billion investment and strategic partnership with OpenAI signal a major new chapter in how creative content might be shared, reimagined, and experienced in the digital age.
