COOLANGATTA, QLD — What was meant to be a sun-soaked celebration of Australian live music turned into moments of panic on Sunday afternoon, November 1, 2026 after a temporary grandstand collapsed during a sold-out festival on Queensland’s Gold Coast, leaving at least three people injured.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:50 p.m. at Coolangatta Beach during the kick-off leg of the Red Hot Summer Tour. Early into the day’s lineup, as iconic rock band Boom Crash Opera was performing on stage, a section of the temporary seating structure suddenly gave way under the weight of festivalgoer's.
Witnesses described a sharp cracking noise followed by sudden screaming as a portion of the grandstand folded. Security personnel, site staff, and local police quickly cordoned off the affected area to evaluate the damage and attend to those caught in the structure.
Queensland Police confirmed that officers and emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene. Authorities reported that at least three people suffered minor injuries. Paramedics treated the injured patrons on-site, with none believed to have sustained life-threatening conditions.
"It happened so fast during the set. One moment people were sitting and cheering, and the next, a whole section just dipped down. Everyone scrambled to clear out," one festival attendee noted.
The temporary grandstand, erected directly near the beach venue for the festival, had reportedly undergone standard engineering assessments and structural tests ahead of the show. Following the collapse, safety marshals cleared the surrounding perimeter to conduct an immediate inspection and ensure the remaining site was secure.
Event organizers addressed the crowd via the PA system shortly after the area was safely contained; reassuring attendees that safety remained the top priority. Promoters announced that patrons ticketed in the grandstand seating area would receive full refunds.
Once the damaged zone was completely secured and deemed isolated from the rest of the site, the festival resumed its programming. Performing artists including Vika & Linda, Eskimo Joe, Birds of Tokyo, Men at Work, and Australian Crawl continued for the remainder of the afternoon.
The Gold Coast show marks the first date of a multi-city national run for the tour. Investigations into the structural failure are ongoing, with safety inspectors and police working to determine what caused the temporary seating to yield.
