Chaos at MMIA: Sudden Fire Breaks Out at Lagos Airport’s Terminal 2

LAGOS, Nigeria — A fire outbreak on Sunday morning triggered panic at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos State, prompting an immediate response from emergency rescue teams.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed the incident in an official statement released via its social media handle.

According to aviation authorities, the airport's dedicated emergency response unit, the Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS), was mobilized immediately after the smoke was detected. Fire crews rushed to the scene and are actively working to bring the blaze under full control and prevent further damage to the terminal's infrastructure.

"The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) wishes to inform the public that a fire incident has occurred at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos," the agency stated. "The FAAN Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS) is currently responding to the incident and working diligently to contain the situation."

While the sudden emergency caused initial anxiety among passengers and airport staff inside the facility, authorities have provided reassurance regarding safety. FAAN confirmed that emergency protocols were successfully activated and that no injuries or fatalities have been recorded as a result of the fire.

Authorities confirmed that there were no deaths or injuries reported as a result of the incident. In the wake of the emergency, flight operations and passenger safety protocols remain under close monitoring to ensure continued security at the terminal.

At this stage, the immediate cause of the fire and the full extent of the structural damage to Terminal 2 remain unconfirmed. Aviation officials noted that a thorough investigation will be conducted once the site is completely secured, and promised to provide further updates to the public as more details emerge.

In the meantime, airport engineers and maintenance teams are standing by to conduct an immediate structural assessment as soon as the area is cleared by fire officials. Airport management has urged passengers traveling through Terminal 2 to remain patient and check with their respective airlines for potential flight delays or terminal reassignments. Further updates regarding the cause of the fire and the full resumption of normal operations are expected to be released as the situation stabilizes.
