Coquelles, France—A passenger minibus collided with a shuttle train at the Channel Tunnel terminal on October 16, 2026, injuring 19 people and forcing a temporary shutdown of cross-border vehicle services.
The incident occurred late in the afternoon inside the vehicle loading zone at the Coquelles terminal near Calais. A minibus carrying international passengers hit the side of an operating shuttle train as it prepared to enter the underground tunnel platform. The impact crushed the front cabin of the bus, trapping several occupants inside.
Roughly 200 emergency responders, including specialized railway rescue crews and medical teams, rushed to the terminal platform. Paramedics treated 19 male victims on scene before transferring two severely injured individuals to regional hospitals in Calais. Seventeen other passengers sustained minor cuts and blunt force trauma.
Eurotunnel operators halted all vehicle shuttle departures for 90 minutes to secure the track area and allow emergency access. Eurostar passenger trains running directly between London, Paris, and Brussels continued operating on separate tracks without delay.
"This is the first time a collision of this nature has occurred inside the secure vehicle loading zone since the facility opened," said Agathe Cury, a local government administrator present at the scene. "Consular officials have been notified because the injured passengers represent multiple foreign nationalities."
Inspectors from the French land transport accident investigation agency arrived at the terminal to examine driver movements and signal compliance. Authorities are investigating whether brake failure or driver disorientation contributed to the vehicle striking the moving train car.
Vehicle shuttle traffic resumed late in the evening under manual speed restrictions while maintenance crews inspected track infrastructure. Long queues of freight trucks and passenger cars stretched back onto access highways leading into the terminal grounds throughout the night.
The damaged minibus was towed to a secure hangar for technical evaluation. French police officers continue interviewing witnesses and reviewing terminal CCTV footage to establish the exact sequence of events leading up to the crash.
