CFB Wainwright Explosion: Alberta Military Base Blast Kills Four, Wildfire Forces Mass Evacuation

Wainwright, Canada— An explosion ripped through CFB Wainwright in Alberta on October 20, killing four service members and injuring dozens before sparking a wildfire that forced a mass evacuation of the base.

The blast hit in the late morning during a routine training cycle. Ammunition stored near a range went up. One detonation set off others. Soldiers described a chain of blasts that rattled buildings two kilometers away. Black smoke rose. Then the grass caught.

CFB Wainwright is one of Canada's largest training bases. Dry conditions and high winds turned a small fire into a major blaze within minutes. Base fire crews were overwhelmed. Alberta Wildfire was called in. Helicopters began water drops as troops in armored vehicles pulled back from the ranges.

The four dead were all Canadian Armed Forces members. Their names have not been released pending notification of next of kin. Base medical staff said dozens suffered burns, shrapnel wounds, and smoke inhalation. At least eight were airlifted to hospitals in Edmonton. Two remain in critical condition.

"We heard a loud boom, then continuous popping," said a reservist who was on the base for an exercise. "The order came to abandon the range. We could see flames moving fast across the field. Everyone was running." Another soldier said visibility dropped to near zero in minutes.

Command at Wainwright ordered a full lockdown of non-essential areas. Family housing was evacuated as a precaution. Roads leading into the base were closed. The Department of National Defence said all training has been suspended. A statement called the incident a "serious and evolving situation" and said the priority is accounting for all personnel.

Questions about ammunition handling are already surfacing. Wainwright stores large quantities of live ordnance for exercises. The exact cause of the initial detonation is not known. Investigators from the Canadian Forces Fire Marshal and the military police have been deployed. A senior officer said it is too early to rule out mechanical failure or human error.

The wildfire complicates recovery. By afternoon, officials said the fire had consumed more than 400 hectares inside the base perimeter. Firefighters built a containment line along the eastern edge. Winds are forecast to ease overnight, but the fire is not contained. Smoke was visible from Wainwright town.

The base remains on high alert. Troops who were not injured are sleeping in temporary shelters. The Defence Minister's office said it is monitoring the situation and will provide an update once the wounded are stabilized. No timeline has been given for reopening the base.
