Carney says Trump “won” on NATO defence spending, supports renewed U.S. strikes on Iran

Prime Minister Mark Carney says U.S. President Donald Trump has “won the argument” on NATO defence spending, arguing that Canada and European allies are responding to persistent U.S. pressure and growing concerns about Russian aggression.

Carney said he spoke with Trump before both leaders arrived for the NATO summit in Ankara and told him that defence spending by Canada and NATO’s European members has been rising. He described Trump’s goal as shifting more of the alliance’s security burden onto European countries and Canada, saying “that is happening” and “it is gaining momentum.”

Carney also said he supports resumed American strikes on Iran. He said Iran attacked targets during a ceasefire period and called the U.S. action an “appropriate” response, while expressing hope the parties would work toward reinstating a ceasefire.
