Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says he is disappointed by U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra’s allegations that Canadian politicians are interfering in the U.S. midterm elections. Speaking in Istanbul, Carney said the claims have no merit and that Canada takes care not to interfere in U.S. politics. Hoekstra has accused officials, including Industry Minister Mélanie Joly and Ontario Premier Doug Ford, of seeking to influence American voters. Carney said diplomatic guidance to avoid appearances of interference was issued before the allegations. The U.S. midterms are scheduled for November 3.
