Carnage in Rakhine: Over 50 Killed as Myanmar Junta Bombs Busy Market

KYAUKTAW, Myanmar — A horrifying military airstrike devastated a bustling riverside market and nearby infrastructure in western Myanmar's Rakhine State, leaving at least 50 people dead and at least 58 others injured. Women and children were among those killed as a fighter jet targeted a high-density civilian hub, marking one of the deadliest bombardments in the region's escalating conflict.

The strike hit Kyauktaw township, targeting the Kaladan River bridge and the crowded "Indian Market". Eyewitnesses and opposition statements described scenes of utter destruction, with local vendors, shoppers, pedestrian passersby, and cargo loaders caught directly in the blast zone. The attack reduced stalls to ash and rubble, leaving desperate families searching through charred debris to identify loved ones under makeshift outdoor pavilions.

The targeted territory is under the control of the Arakan Army, an ethnic armed group that has captured significant ground in Rakhine State. As the military junta continues to face battlefield losses to opposition networks, its armed forces have increasingly turned to heavy aerial bombardments against civilian-populated areas and vital supply routes.

The strike drew immediate condemnation from the United Nations. UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep alarm over the horrific loss of life, reiterating that those responsible must be held accountable. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk stressed that the attack raises grave concerns regarding international humanitarian law, warning that pervasive violence across Rakhine continues to devastate vulnerable populations, including the Rohingya community.

Rescue workers and aid volunteers warn that the death toll may rise further as search efforts persist and critically injured victims undergo emergency medical care. With nearly half a million people already displaced by ongoing combat across Rakhine State, humanitarian conditions remain increasingly catastrophic amid relentless military raids.

The escalation has also intensified regional diplomacy and cross-border security concerns, as neighboring countries brace for potential surges in refugee arrivals across the western border. Regional observers warn that without coordinated international pressure and strict arms embargoes to curb aerial capabilities, similar indiscriminate attacks on civilian trade corridors are likely to recur, further isolating affected communities from vital food pipelines and emergency aid.
