BANGKOK — What began as a typical Wednesday afternoon shopping trip turned chaotic at a busy supermarket complex in Bangkok’s On Nut area, after a sedan smashed through the glass entrance, injuring six people. Among those struck was a 6-year-old girl.
The incident unfolded around 3:30 PM at the Big C supermarket complex along On Nut Road. CCTV footage showed a white Toyota Vios breaking through the glass entrance panels, bringing heavy frame structures down onto bystanders entering and leaving the store.
Witnesses described a scene of sudden panic as glass shattered across the concourse. The vehicle struck multiple people before grinding to a halt inside the storefront, momentarily trapping shoppers and vendors under debris. One victim, an 81-year-old lottery vendor who was sitting near the entrance, credited a metal safety barrier with slowing the car down and preventing more severe impacts.
"The car suddenly crashed right into where we were sitting. A metal barrier slowed it down, but the post dislodged and struck my leg."— Duanchai, 81, victim present during the crash
Emergency responders and rescue teams arrived at the scene shortly after the crash to administer first aid. Six female victims—a 6-year-old girl and five women aged between 34 and 81 years old—were transported to Ruam Jai Rak Hospital and Samrong General Hospital for medical treatment.
Medical officials confirmed that while victims suffered varying injuries—including bone swelling, bruises, and leg impacts—none of the injuries are currently considered life-threatening.
The driver, identified by police as 67-year-old Suthida, was unharmed in the incident.
According to preliminary police statements, Suthida had finished shopping with her younger sister and was attempting to pull out of the parking area near the main doors. She told investigators that she panicked when the vehicle moved unexpectedly, becoming confused by the pedals and stepping on the accelerator instead of the brake.
"I panicked when the car surged forward and hit the wrong pedal. I was too shocked to leave the vehicle immediately."— Suthida, driver
Following the incident, the driver’s insurance provider was notified and will cover all medical expenses for the victims as well as property repairs for the damaged facility. Expressing deep remorse, the driver also pledged direct financial aid to each injured person in addition to any insurance payouts. Meanwhile, local authorities have deferred filing formal charges while the victims undergo medical treatment, intending to take their official statements as their recoveries progress.
