Vietnamese police have arrested the captain of a speedboat that overturned near Phu Quoc in southern Vietnam, leaving 15 Indian tourists dead.
Authorities said the vessel was carrying 32 Indian tourists and four crew when it capsized about 400 metres from Hon May Rut Ngoai island near Phu Quoc. Rescuers recovered 21 people, and all 15 fatalities were retrieved from the water. Survivors were taken to hospitals, and bodies were to be transported for repatriation after official procedures.
State media reported the captain, identified as Nguyen Hong Hai, 57, was detained for alleged violations of waterway transport safety regulations. The cause of the accident was not immediately clear, and Vietnamese officials said an investigation is ongoing.
Vietnam’s prime minister ordered authorities to look into what caused the crash and to review maritime safety in similar areas. Indian officials said embassy personnel were in contact with Vietnamese authorities and that many survivors had begun traveling back to India, while at least one injured person remained in critical condition.
