Canada Tells Israel that Lebanon’s Sovereignty ‘Must Not be Violated’

Canada has stated it "strongly condemns" Israel’s preparations to occupy southern Lebanon and warned that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon "must not be violated." This warning follows Israel's plans for a significant ground invasion into Lebanese territory extending up to 30 kilometers inside Lebanon's southern border.

Since the beginning of March, the death toll in Lebanon from Israeli attacks has risen to at least 1,072 individuals, with nearly 3,000 wounded, and over a million people displaced due to the conflict. As Israel's ground incursion seems imminent, concerns about a humanitarian crisis are growing across all levels.

The Canadian Ministry of Global Affairs has expressed solidarity with the Lebanese government and its citizens. In a statement released on Wednesday, the ministry urged all parties involved to act in accordance with international law and protect civilians, emphasizing a need to refrain from attacking infrastructure, health workers, and peacekeepers.

France's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noel Barrot, echoed this sentiment, calling for Israel to halt its planned occupation of southern Lebanon due to the severe impact such actions would have on civilians.

Israel’s military plans include taking control of a security zone up to the Litani River and preventing displaced Lebanese residents from returning until security for northern Israeli residents is deemed guaranteed. This has raised alarms, as Israeli officials draw parallels with previous conflicts, indicating a potential replication of tactics used in Gaza.

The Lebanese government condemned recent attacks, including airstrikes on key infrastructure like the Qasmiyeh Bridge, asserting these are precursors to a ground invasion. The situation continues to escalate, with casualties reported daily and significant unrest in northern Israel due to retaliatory actions.

The unfolding crisis highlights the ongoing complexity and severity of the conflict in the region, increasing the urgency for international diplomatic engagement to prevent further deterioration.
