Toronto, Canada— A mass shooting investigation expanded into an international search for an accomplice on October 30, 2026, after Toronto police said evidence points to a second person who helped plan an attack that killed four people last week.
The shooting occurred at a commercial plaza in North York on October 23. A gunman opened fire at a gathering, then was killed by police. Investigators said the shooter did not act alone. Cell data, purchase receipts, and rented vehicle logs point to another individual who left Canada hours after the attack.
CBC News reported the suspected accomplice flew from Pearson to Chicago on October 24, then traveled by bus to Detroit. U.S. Customs and Border Protection confirmed a person of interest was flagged but not stopped because the Canadian warrant had not yet been entered into the shared system.
“We have identified a person who provided logistical support, including acquisition of firearms and transportation,” said Toronto Police Inspector Glenn Russell at a briefing Thursday. “We are working directly with the FBI and ATF to locate and detain this individual.”
Yahoo News Canada said investigators recovered encrypted messages on the shooter’s phone that discussed targets and timing. The messages were sent to a number registered in Michigan. Forensic teams are working to break the encryption on a second device found in a storage locker in Etobicoke.
Victims’ families demanded answers outside police headquarters. Four dead included two teenagers. Seven others remain hospitalized. The city has held nightly vigils at Mel Lastman Square.
The RCMP said it has placed border alerts and is tracing financial transfers from a money service business in Brampton to accounts in the U.S. Midwest. Prosecutors said extradition papers are being prepared but have not yet been filed.
Police executed three search warrants Thursday in Toronto and Mississauga, seizing computers, ammunition boxes, and a 3D printer used to produce firearm parts. No arrests were made at those locations.
Tonight the suspect remains at large and unidentified publicly. Police said they will release a photo once identity is confirmed through U.S. authorities. The investigation remains active across both countries.
