Canada Lowers Tariffs on China: Toward a New Economic Partnership

A Context of Trade Tensions

In recent months, relations between Ottawa and Beijing had been strained. In response to a series of surtaxes imposed on Canada on electric vehicles (with tariffs reaching up to 100%), China retaliated by imposing heavy duties on several Canadian agricultural products such as canola, peas, and seafood. This situation weakened Canadian agricultural exports to one of their most important global markets.

Key Elements of the Agreement

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Mark Carney, during an official visit to Beijing, the two countries agreed on a preliminary tariff pact. The main points include:

🇨🇦 Canada: Lower tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles Canada agreed to reduce import duties on Chinese-made electric vehicles from 100% to 6.1%, for an initial quota of approximately 49,000 units.

🇨🇳 China: Reduced tariffs on Canadian agricultural exports In return, China committed to significantly lowering its tariffs on several Canadian agricultural products, notably canola seeds, with combined duties expected to fall from around 84% to 15% by March 1. Other products such as peas, lobsters, crabs, and animal feed will also see discriminatory tariffs lifted by the end of the year.

Why This Shift Now?

According to Ottawa, the agreement is the result of months of intense economic negotiations and represents an effort to rebalance trade relations after significant negative impacts on Canadian exports. The government estimates that renewed trade with China could generate nearly $3 billion in new export opportunities for farmers, fishers, and related supply chains.

Controversy and Reactions

While many business groups welcome the deal as a way to boost exports and competitiveness, others have raised concerns. Representatives of the automotive industry fear that an influx of Chinese vehicles could put pressure on domestic manufacturers and associated jobs. Some politicians have also warned about the geopolitical risks of closer economic ties with Beijing.

A Step Toward Trade Stability

This tariff agreement is widely seen as a strong signal of a shared desire to restore economic dialogue and ease trade tensions between Canada and China. It may also represent a step toward broader cooperation in sectors such as agriculture, clean technologies, and energy.
