Statistics Canada says a review has overturned an earlier estimate that the country experienced its first annual population decline on record. Updated figures show Canada’s population increased by 189,425 people, or 0.5 percent, between July 2025 and July 2026. The agency said the initial decline was linked to incomplete information and temporary-resident changes. Although growth remains historically weak, the revised data indicate Canada is still expanding.
