Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government has announced a $1.95 billion investment to renew VIA Rail’s long-distance, regional, and remote locomotive fleet while restoring passenger locomotive assembly in Canada. The package includes $1.6 billion for 45 hybrid battery-diesel locomotives, with up to 36 receiving final assembly domestically, plus $357 million for a new Montréal facility. The project is expected to support approximately 1,200 full-time-equivalent jobs and improve reliability, fuel efficiency, maintenance capacity, and passenger service across Canadian routes for decades ahead.
