‘Can’t Believe I’m Sitting Here’: Paraglider Escapes Death After Plane Rips Through Glider in Midair Collision

a 44-year-old paraglider experienced a life-threatening incident while soaring above the Piesendorf area of Salzburg. During a scenic flight, a small plane collided with her glider, causing it to severely damage the canopy and plunge her thousands of feet into a spiraling descent.

The pilot of the 28-year-old plane reported to authorities that he tried to avoid the collision but was unable to do so in time. According to the Salzburg State Police, the propeller of the aircraft cut through the paraglider, compromising its structure.

Despite the horrifying situation, the paraglider, identified as Sabrina, remained calm and activated her reserve parachute. The deployment was successful, allowing her to slow her descent as she spiraled towards the ground. Video footage captured the dramatic moment; the glider was observed trailing in two shredded pieces behind her as she maneuvered to safety.

The impact of the collision led to rapid descent, and she narrowly avoided hitting nearby vegetation before landing on a grassy area. Once on the ground, she was promptly airlifted by police to safety. Fortunately, both she and the pilot emerged from the incident without serious injuries.

In a heartfelt Instagram post following the ordeal, Sabrina expressed disbelief at her survival: “I actually still can’t believe that I’m sitting here typing this,” she wrote, adding that she sustained only minor bruises despite the traumatic experience.

This incident serves as both a reminder of the inherent risks of paragliding and the importance of safety measures. The local authorities are currently investigating the accident to prevent future occurrences and ensure the safety of both aviators and air sports practitioners.
