Calimesa Inferno: New Evacuations Ordered as Riverside Brush Fire Explodes to 1,500 Acres

CALIMESA, CA — A fast-moving, wind-driven brush fire erupted in the rugged Badlands southwest of Calimesa on Monday afternoon, rapidly exploding to 1,500 acres with zero percent containment. Dubbed the Shore Fire, the aggressive blaze has triggered urgent evacuation orders and multiple evacuation warnings as it threatens scattered properties in the rural expanse.

The non-injury blaze was first reported at approximately 3:23 PM on Monday, June 15, 2026, near Lake Shore Drive and San Timoteo Canyon Road in the unincorporated area of El Casco. Fueled by gusty afternoon winds and dry vegetation, the fire exhibited a moderate to rapid northward rate of spread.

While initial reports put the fire at roughly 120 acres around 5:00 PM, it drastically ballooned to 450 acres by 6:00 PM. Fueled by the difficult terrain, the inferno tore through the hills, reaching an estimated 1,500 acres just before 7:45 PM.

As the flames advanced near the Fisherman's Retreat area, the Riverside County Fire Department escalated its response, issuing immediate Evacuation Orders due to an imminent threat to life.

Evacuation orders have been put in place for zones RVC-0231-B and RVC-0231-C, impacting residents along the perimeter bordered by San Timoteo Canyon Road and the Moreno Valley (60) Freeway.

Additionally, nine separate evacuation warnings have been issued for surrounding areas, including zones RVC-0231-A, RVC-0642, CMS-0233, and several Beaumont-area quadrants. To accommodate emergency vehicles, law enforcement has implemented road closures, shutting down San Timoteo Canyon Road between Redlands Boulevard and Lake Shore Drive, as well as the westbound lanes of Highway 60 at the Interstate 10 interchange.

An official evacuation center for displaced residents and their pets has been established at Valley View High School (13135 Nason Street, Moreno Valley). Large animals are being accepted at the San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus.

A multi-agency task force is currently battling the flames in the unforgiving, steep terrain. Hundreds of firefighters from the Riverside County Fire Department, Hemet Fire Department, Palm Springs Fire Department, and Cal Fire-San Bernardino County have been deployed to the northern flank of the rugged gap between Interstate 10 and Highway 60.

The ground assault is being heavily reinforced from the skies. Five air tankers, including a Very Large Air Tanker (VLAT) capable of dropping over 8,000 gallons of retardant, were dispatched alongside water-dropping helicopters. To maintain the momentum into the night, officials have requested specialized night-flying helicopters to drop water on active hot spots as ambient winds begin to abate.

The cause of the Shore Fire remains officially under investigation. No civilian or firefighter injuries have been reported at this time.
