Calder Highway Horror: Teen Dead and Two Critically Injured in High-Speed Crash Northwest of Melbourne

WOOSANG, Australia — A rural stretch of highway northwest of Melbourne became the scene of a devastating tragedy on Saturday morning, May 16, 2026 after a high-speed crash left a 14-year-old boy dead and two other teenagers fighting for their lives in the hospital.

The fatal incident involving a vehicle believed to have been stolen overnight has deeply shocked the local community and put a stark spotlight on the dangers of high-risk youth car theft.

The catastrophic crash occurred shortly before 10:00 AM on Saturday along the Calder Highway, near the intersection of Woosang-Yeungroon Road in Woosang—a rural locality situated roughly 250 kilometers northwest of Melbourne.

According to Victoria Police, the vehicle was traveling at high speed when the driver suddenly lost control. The car veered sharply off the bitumen road surface and careened into the shoulder before colliding violently with a tree.

The force of the high-speed impact was so severe that it completely crushed the cabin, instantly killing a 14-year-old boy who was riding as a passenger.

Emergency service crews, including local police, paramedics, and the Country Fire Authority (CFA), rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, first responders faced a grim and highly technical rescue operation, discovering the remaining two occupants trapped deep inside the mangled wreckage.

The crash resulted in the tragic death of a 14-year-old male passenger, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The two other occupants—an 18-year-old male driver and another 14-year-old male passenger—both sustained massive, life-threatening injuries and remain in critical condition.

Rescue teams utilized specialized hydraulic cutting equipment to meticulously peel back the crushed steel of the cabin and free the survivors. Two air ambulance helicopters were dispatched to the highway, landing directly on the cordoned-off lanes to airlift both the 18-year-old driver and the surviving 14-year-old passenger to a specialized trauma hospital in Melbourne. Both remain in intensive care in critical condition.

As Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives examine the debris field, a troubling narrative has begun to emerge surrounding the origin of the vehicle.

According to a Victoria Police statement, initial findings indicate that the vehicle involved in the crash had been stolen overnight from a property in Mildura—a major regional city roughly 542 kilometers northwest of Melbourne. The theft is believed to have occurred just hours before the teenagers embarked on their ill-fated journey down the Calder Highway.

The Calder Highway remained closed for a significant amount of time on Saturday as forensic investigators mapped the tire tracks, analyzed the vehicle's speed, and worked to determine exactly what caused the driver to lose control.

Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the vehicle traveling along the Calder Highway between Mildura and Woosang early Saturday morning, or anyone with relevant dashcam footage, to immediately contact Crime Stoppers.
