Cagayan de Oro River Overflows Acacia Street in Carmen Amid Tropical Storm Basyang

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — Floodwaters surged through Acacia Street in the Carmen area after sections of the Cagayan de Oro River overflowed amid heavy rains brought by Tropical Storm Basyang. The intense rainfall caused by the storm led to the river breaching its banks, inundating low lying streets, and stranding vehicles and residents in waist deep water.

Local authorities responded by activating emergency protocols and coordinating with disaster risk reduction teams to assist affected residents and ensure their safety. Evacuation efforts were underway in the most severely flooded neighborhoods, where families were moved to safer ground or nearby evacuation centers.

The overflow in Carmen added to widespread impacts across Cagayan de Oro City, where Tropical Storm Basyang also triggered landslides and flooding in other parts of the region. In a nearby barangay, a landslide caused by the storm’s heavy downpour claimed the lives of four members of one family, underscoring the storm’s destructive force.

City officials urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid floodwaters, and heed disaster advisories as the storm continues to bring heavy rainfall and hazardous conditions to Northern Mindanao.
