Córdoba Structural Collapse: Flash Storms Rip Through Argentine City, Two Dead, Ten Wounded, Emergency Declared

Córdoba, Argentina— Severe flash storms battered Córdoba on October 20, leaving two people dead and ten injured after buildings and structures collapsed across the city and surrounding areas.

The storm hit in the early afternoon. Winds gusted over 90 kilometers per hour. Hail and heavy rain followed. Within 30 minutes, emergency lines were overwhelmed. Roofs were torn off. Trees fell onto cars and power lines. Two older buildings in the city center collapsed entirely. A wall in Barrio Alberdi gave way onto a sidewalk where people had taken shelter.

The two dead were killed in separate collapses. One was a 62-year-old man crushed by a falling wall in his home. The other was a 19-year-old woman hit by debris from a commercial building facade. Ten injured were taken to Hospital de Urgencias. Doctors said two have serious fractures. Others suffered cuts from flying glass. Paramedics said most injuries occurred while people were trying to secure roofs.

Córdoba's municipal emergency committee declared a state of alert. More than 50 calls for structural damage were logged in three hours. Power was out in several neighborhoods. The city's bus service was suspended. Schools closed early. Residents posted videos of streets turned into rivers, with water entering ground-floor shops.

Meteorologists said the storm was a supercell that formed rapidly over the Sierras. The National Weather Service had issued a yellow alert for severe storms, but the intensity exceeded forecasts. A forecaster said, "Wind shear was extreme. These systems can produce tornado-like damage." Córdoba province has seen an increase in violent convective storms this spring.

Building safety is now under scrutiny. Many structures in Córdoba's older neighborhoods are poorly maintained, with adobe walls and weak mortar. A civil defense official said inspections will be carried out on buildings flagged in previous surveys. "We have a list of at-risk structures," he said. "The storm found them first."

The provincial government said it will provide assistance to families whose homes were damaged. The mayor's office announced that rubble removal will start tonight. Residents in affected blocks have been evacuated to community centers. They were told not to return until engineers clear the buildings.

Rain has stopped. The wind has eased. Emergency crews remain on the streets clearing fallen trees and power lines. Damage assessment is underway.
