Businessman Yorgen Fenech has gone on trial in Malta accused of masterminding the 2017 assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. Prosecutors say Fenech orchestrated the killing of the anti-corruption reporter, whose work exposed alleged wrongdoing by powerful figures in Malta. Fenech denies the accusations.

The proceedings come after years of legal action in the Caruana Galizia case. Several other individuals have been convicted for roles connected to the assassination, including people found guilty of supplying explosives used to kill the journalist. The case has also been shaped by delays and appeal processes, as authorities worked to identify not only those directly responsible for carrying out the attack, but also those alleged to have ordered it.

Fenech was arrested in 2019 in connection with the investigation, after police moved against him as part of the broader prosecution of those involved.
