Building Canopy Collapses in Heavy Rain: Four Pedestrians Hospitalized as Strong Gusts Batter Indian City Streets

Mumbai, India— The metal groaned, then dropped. On Tuesday afternoon a commercial canopy bolted to a two-story building gave way during a sharp downpour and gust front. Four people walking below went down with it.

Press Trust of India said the collapse happened at around 3:15 p.m. in a busy market lane in Thane, outside Mumbai. The canopy was a 20-foot corrugated sheet extended over a storefront, held by rusted angle irons. Wind speed spiked to 55 kmph.

Pedestrians were caught under the sheet. Vendors shouted. A second gust lifted the edge and pinned a man underneath. Locals lifted it by hand before the fire brigade arrived. That saved lives.

"We heard a loud crack and saw the rods bend," said a tea stall owner who saw it fall. "People were screaming under it. Water was everywhere." He had warned the shop owner last monsoon about the anchors. No one listened.

All four victims were taken to a civic hospital with fractures and head injuries. One woman in her fifties remains in observation. Municipal officials said the structure lacked a valid stability certificate.

Thane Municipal Corporation has ordered an audit of 300 similar canopies across the city. That order has been issued twice before since 2022. Most shops build extensions without permission. Inspections happen only after someone gets hurt.

India's pre-monsoon showers are getting more violent. Short bursts, high wind shear. Old facades and add-on steel cannot handle the load. Engineers said the anchor bolts showed corrosion and inadequate depth.

Police registered a case of negligence against the building owner. The shop was sealed. The owner is absconding, officials said.

Tonight the lane is cordoned off. The twisted canopy lies on the sidewalk. Four beds in the hospital are full.
