Brussels: Rioters Clash with Police at Anti-Austerity Rally

Hundreds of young people confronted police on Friday at the edges of an anti-austerity march in Brussels. Masked rioters threw rocks and firecrackers, set fires and damaged buses, bikes and scooters. Police responded with tear gas and water cannons, and said about 20 people had been arrested, mostly minors. The union-organized march itself proceeded peacefully, drawing an estimated 30,000 to 50,000 participants. Demonstrators opposed government budget cuts and rising living costs as Prime Minister Bart De Wever’s government seeks €10 billion in savings by 2029
