Bronx Bus Crash: 5 Injured After Two MTA Buses Collide in Thursday Night Collision

NEW YORK — A chaotic scene unfolded in the Bronx late on Thursday night, July 30, 2026 when an MTA bus slammed into the back of another MTA bus, injuring five people and trapping at least one passenger inside the wreckage.

The violent collision occurred at approximately 9:58 p.m. on Hunts Point Avenue, between East 163rd Street and Hunts Point Avenue.

According to investigators, an MTA Bx6 bus was traveling eastbound on Hunts Point Avenue when it struck the rear end of a Bx5 bus that was stopped along the street.

The parked Bx5 bus was actively carrying passengers at the time of the impact. The force of the crash caved in portions of the interior seating, causing immediate panic among those on board.

"It was a sudden, massive impact," a witness near the scene reported. "You could hear the crunch of the metal from down the block, and people immediately started running toward the buses to see how they could help."

First responders, including the NYPD and FDNY EMS crews, rushed to the intersection and quickly swarmed the heavily damaged transit vehicles.

The rescue operation became complicated when emergency workers discovered that a female passenger was trapped inside one of the buses. The intense impact of the collision had caved the surrounding seats inward, pinning her leg tightly between the twisted metal.

Crews worked meticulously to cut through the debris and successfully freed her after several anxious minutes.

Officials confirmed that a total of five passengers sustained injuries in the crash. Following the impact, paramedics triaged victims on the pavement directly outside the buses before transporting the injured individuals to nearby local hospitals for further medical evaluation, though none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening. Additionally, the collision caused notable traffic delays as Hunts Point Avenue was partially shut down for several hours while tow trucks and transit officials worked to clear the heavily damaged buses from the roadway.

The New York City Transit Authority and the NYPD have launched a joint investigation into the exact cause of the crash.

Investigators are currently reviewing onboard surveillance footage from both vehicles and interviewing the driver of the Bx6 bus to determine why they failed to avoid the stopped Bx5 vehicle.
