Broken Confidence, Hidden Cameras: Batavia Chiropractor Faces Lawsuit Over Secret Filming

In a place where many seek healing and relief, trust is often the first medicine. Patients arriving at a chiropractor’s office expect care, privacy — a quiet respect for vulnerability. But now, beneath the calm of treatment tables and hushed therapy rooms, a grave betrayal of that trust is unfolding. In Batavia, Illinois, a civil lawsuit alleges that patients — some mere children — were secretly recorded without consent while unclothed, transforming a space of healing into one of hidden violation.

According to authorities and the families now seeking justice, the accused — David H. Hanson, owner of Hanson Family Chiropractic — allegedly installed hidden cameras throughout treatment rooms, including in areas used for red-light or near-infrared-light therapy. These cameras purportedly recorded more than 180 patients — ranging from adults to children — as they disrobed or received treatment.

The most recent lawsuit, filed on behalf of a mother, her two minor children, and the children’s grandmother, seeks at least US$16.5 million in damages. The complaint cites multiple legal claims — invasion of privacy, negligence, emotional distress, breach of fiduciary duty, and violations under consumer-fraud statutes.

Court filings and prosecutors’ statements reveal disturbing details: hidden cameras disguised as vents or fans, capturing footage over several years, including inside private therapy rooms. Some footage reportedly involved minors.

The fallout has been swift and severe. In addition to the civil suit, the accused faces criminal charges filed by the Kane County State's Attorney's Office. Charges include producing, disseminating, and possessing child pornography, as well as unauthorized video recording of minors.

The emotional toll on victims is incalculable. In a press conference, attorneys described the episode as a “total violation of trust” and “deeply damaging,” especially for patients who sought care believing they were in safe hands. For a family that walked in seeking healing, the alleged betrayal may scar far longer than any medical condition — a reminder of how deeply privacy, dignity, and safety are woven into the fabric of care.

As legal proceedings move forward, the case raises urgent questions: How can patients protect their privacy when receiving medical treatment? What safeguards should exist to prevent such abuses in spaces designed for vulnerability? Lawmakers in Illinois have already responded: a proposed bill will aim to outlaw hidden cameras in private or semi-private spaces such as medical-treatment rooms, locker rooms, and restrooms. Even beyond this case, the lawsuit highlights a broader challenge: protecting trust, dignity, and privacy in healthcare — and ensuring that places meant for healing remain just that.
