As the summer travel season approaches, British holidaymakers are experiencing significant delays at European airports, with some reporting wait times of up to six hours at passport control. These issues stem from the introduction of the Entry Exit System (EES), which mandates the collection of biometric data for travelers from outside the EU.
Yvonne Moynihan, the UK managing director of Wizz Air, has advised travelers to plan for these lengthy queues, emphasizing the need to arrive at least three hours before departure. Airlines have noted that some passengers are missing return or connecting flights due to the prolonged waits.
The EES requires travelers to register their fingerprints upon entry, which then need to be verified when they leave. Since its implementation, nearly 80 million entries and exits have been logged, along with about 35,000 refusals of entry. Concerns have been raised that high passenger volumes during the peak summer period may exacerbate these challenges, making delays even more common.
Although delays have varied by location, regions such as Spain, Portugal, and France have become known hotspots for long lines at border checks. Moynihan mentioned that while some regions have managed their queues better than others, travelers should be prepared for potential wait times and should pack essentials like portable chargers and water.
Efforts to mitigate these delays include a partial suspension of biometric checks when queues become excessively long, as reported by the European Commission. However, with varying implementations across different countries, frustrations among travelers continue to mount.
In light of anticipated delays, passengers are encouraged to allow ample time for connections and remain informed about their travel itineraries. As the situation develops, the focus will be on coordinating border management strategies to ensure smoother travel experiences throughout the busy summer months.
