Bridge Collapse Chaos: Iron Structure Snaps Under Heavy Dumper in Himachal’s Kinnaur

KINNAUR, INDIA — A major infrastructure accident was narrowly averted on Tuesday morning, June 23, 2026, when a 190-foot-long Bailey bridge over the Sutlej River suddenly collapsed in the landslide-prone Urni area of Himachal Pradesh’s tribal Kinnaur district. The steel-framed structure plunged entirely into the surging waters below while an overloaded dumper truck was crossing it.

The incident sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the ongoing challenges of maintaining vital transport routes in the region's fragile, mountainous terrain.

The dramatic failure occurred at approximately 11:00 a.m. near the notorious landslide hotspot of Urni Dhank on National Highway 5 (NH-5). According to eyewitnesses and local reports, a loud, sharp cracking sound echoed through the valley as the heavy dumper, which was heavily laden with sand, neared the center of the span. Within seconds, the engineering structure gave way under the extreme load, dropping into the river along with the vehicle.

Preliminary assessments by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Public Works Department (PWD) point to excessive stress caused by the overloaded dumper truck as the immediate trigger for the structural failure. This Bailey bridge served as a vital alternative route, functioning as a crucial bypass link to keep traffic flowing whenever the main sections of NH-5 were choked by rockfalls or landslides.

Despite the terrifying scale of the collapse, emergency officials confirmed that a major tragedy was averted. A rescue team from the nearby Tapri police station rushed to the riverbank immediately after the alarm was raised.

Local residents and emergency personnel successfully extracted the dumper driver from the semi-submerged cabin. He was rushed to a nearby medical facility, where he was treated for minor injuries and emotional shock. Remarkably, no other casualties or vehicles were caught in the structural collapse.

Senior administrative and law enforcement officials, including Kinnaur Deputy Commissioner Dr. Amit Sharma and Superintendent of Police Sushil Kumar Sharma, arrived on-site shortly after the incident to oversee recovery operations and take stock of the situation.

"The traffic has been immediately diverted through alternative regional routes to prevent any long-term gridlock," confirmed SP Sushil Kumar Sharma.

While the loss of the Bailey bridge creates logistical headaches for local transit, authorities reassured the public that main vehicular movement toward crucial sectors like Shimla, Rampur, Reckong Peo, Kaza, and the Sangla Valley continues to function via alternative lanes. Deputy Commissioner Sharma has instructed the NHAI and PWD to evaluate the damage and initiate a fast-tracked plan to reconstruct the crossing and fully restore the route's integrity.
