Brazil, Rain Slicked Highway Sends Bus Sliding, Passengers Thrown, Emergency Crews Rush To Save Victims

Sao Paulo, Brazil— The bus left at 6:30 a.m. and never reached the terminal. On October 29, rain had been falling for hours, turning the BR-116 into a slick sheet. Around kilometer 240, the driver braked on a curve. The bus slid, hit the guardrail, and tipped onto its side.

Dozens were inside. Commuters heading to factories and schools. The impact shattered windows. Bags flew. People were thrown against seats and then against each other. A passenger near the front said, "Water was coming in through the broken glass. People were screaming to get out the back door."

Highway police arrived in 12 minutes. Firefighters from two stations followed. They found the bus on its right side, blocking two lanes. Diesel leaked. The doors were jammed. Crews smashed the rear emergency window and pulled people through. Some walked. Some were carried.

At least 28 injured were counted by noon. Three with serious injuries. Others with cuts, fractures, and concussions. Ambulances took them to three hospitals in Curitiba and Fazenda Rio Grande. Hospitals activated mass casualty protocols. Families started calling, looking for names.

The driver survived. He told officers the bus hydroplaned. He tried to correct. The road markings were faded, he said. Investigators will check tires, brake condition, and speed. The black box from the fleet's tracking system was removed for data download.

The transport agency said the company had a valid operating license and recent inspection. That will be verified. A statement from the company said, "We are assisting victims and cooperating fully. Safety is our priority." The same line appears after every crash on this highway.

BR-116 is notorious. Long, straight sections, then sudden curves. Drainage is poor in parts. When it rains, crashes spike. Locals call this stretch "the soap." Federal police have requested resurfacing for two years. Funds have not come.

By 2 p.m., a crane lifted the bus upright. The wreck was towed. Lanes reopened slowly. The injured list was still being updated. The investigation into cause and liability had just started.
