Brasilia, Brazil— A speeding car jumped the curb and struck three pedestrians in Brasília on Saturday, killing one and sending two others to hospital with serious injuries.
The crash happened on a wide avenue near a commercial block. Witnesses said the car was moving well above the speed limit when it lost control on a curve.
The vehicle hit the group who were walking near a bus stop. One man died at the scene. The other two were thrown several meters and landed on the sidewalk.
Fire department paramedics arrived within ten minutes. They performed first aid and transported the injured to Hospital de Base. One is in critical condition.
The driver, a 28-year-old man, remained at the scene. Police said he showed signs of impairment. He was detained and taken to the police station for a breath test.
“It happened in seconds,” said a kiosk owner who saw the impact. “The car was too fast. People screamed. Then everything went silent.”
Traffic police closed two lanes to collect evidence. Skid marks stretched for more than 40 meters. Debris from the front bumper was scattered across the road.
The Detran-DF said the driver had prior fines for speeding. Investigators will review camera footage from nearby businesses to determine exact speed.
The victim who died was a 34-year-old worker returning home from a shift. His family has been notified. The case has been registered as homicide by motor vehicle.
