Bloodshed in Plateau: 5 Herders Killed in Deadly Attack on Kassa Community

BARKIN LADI, Nigeria — Fresh violence erupted in Plateau State on Sunday evening after armed assailants ambushed a group of herders in the Kassa community of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, leaving five people dead and escalating security concerns across the region.

The fatal incident occurred along a key transit corridor as the victims were traveling through the area, according to initial reports from local community representatives and security sources.

The attack targeted herders who were transporting livestock in a commercial vehicle. Unidentified gunmen opened fire on the vehicle as it passed through Kassa, situated within the Barkin Ladi council area.

The sudden volley of gunfire killed occupants on the spot and left others with severe gunshot injuries. Local emergency personnel and security forces deployed to the scene shortly after the attack to evacuate the deceased and transport injured survivors to nearby medical facilities for treatment. The violence in Kassa comes amid a troubling surge in reprisal attacks, cattle rustling, and targeted ambushes across Barkin Ladi, Riyom, and Bokkos local government areas.

Community leaders and representatives from the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) strongly condemned the attack, calling on affected families to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands. MACBAN representatives urged military and police authorities to conduct a thorough investigation, track down the perpetrators, and restore security along volatile transport routes.

Joint security forces, including troops from Operation Safe Haven / Operation Enduring Peace, have intensified patrols around Kassa and neighboring communities to forestall potential reprisal violence and maintain order across Plateau State.

As security operations continue across the state, local authorities have appealed for increased intelligence sharing from residents to help track down the perpetrators. Human rights advocates and regional peace building organizations have also voiced growing concern over the economic and social toll of the recurring clashes, warning that unchecked hostilities threaten local agriculture, livestock supply chains, and rural livelihoods throughout Plateau State.
