Bloodshed in Nigeria: At Least 25 Killed in Brutal Village Attack

KANO, Nigeria — At least 25 people have been killed following a brutal overnight on Wednesday, August 19, 2026 assault on a village in Nigeria's central Plateau State, local officials and surviving residents confirmed. The violence marks the latest flare-up in a restive region long plagued by deadly communal clashes.

The attack targeted Binper village, located in the Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State. According to local accounts, heavily armed assailants stormed the community under the cover of darkness, moving house to house while wielding guns and machetes.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as families were woken by screams and gunfire. Attacking forces set several residential structures ablaze and opened fire on fleeing occupants.

"They went from house to house, attacking residents," said Amos John, a local resident. "Most of those killed were women and children who couldn't flee in time."

Local officials initially reported 23 fatalities at the scene. However, two additional victims succumbed to severe injuries after being rushed to nearby medical facilities, bringing the confirmed death toll to at least 25.

Plateau State, situated in Nigeria's Middle Belt, has historically served as a flashpoint for violent resource disputes between nomadic herding groups and settled farming communities. These long-standing conflicts over grazing land and water rights are frequently compounded by deep-seated ethnic and religious divisions.

State Police Commissioner Ayodeji Faniyan visited the devastated village to assess the damage, offer condolences to bereaved families, and deploy additional tactical units to prevent potential reprisal attacks.

Community leaders have expressed growing frustration over the security situation. A spokesperson for the Mwaghavul Youth Movement, Tubwot Joël Sunday, called on federal authorities to urgently overhaul security measures in vulnerable rural districts.

"The recurring destruction of communities, killing of innocent citizens, burning of homes, and destruction of farmlands cannot continue to be treated as ordinary incidents," Sunday stated. Authorities confirmed that security forces are actively searching the surrounding areas to track down the perpetrators.
