GUWAHATI, India — A horrific violent confrontation disrupted a commercial district in Assam’s capital on Monday evening, October 26, 2026 leaving five people dead and another critically injured in a targeted mass shooting at Hotel Bilas Inn, located in Guwahati’s prominent Bora Service area.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:00 PM when a long-standing property and lease agreement conflict boiled over into gunfire inside the hotel premises. Four victims died at the scene, while a fifth succumbed to gunshot injuries shortly after arrival at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). A sixth individual sustained gunshot wounds and remains hospitalized in stable condition.
According to senior law enforcement officials, four of the deceased were members of the hotel owner’s family, while the fifth victim and the surviving injured individual were associates from their home village.
"This is a deeply tragic incident," said Guwahati Commissioner of Police Partha Sarathi Mahanta. "Preliminary investigations indicate the firing stemmed directly from an escalating commercial dispute surrounding the hotel's lease agreement."
Assam Police launched an immediate operation, cordoning off the area near GS Road and apprehending the single suspect within an hour of the shooting.
Police identified the suspect as Ghanakanta Gogoi, a local resident who had leased the hotel facility the previous year. Authorities confirmed that Gogoi acted independently and was not a hired assailant. Investigating officers seized the firearm used in the rampage—a licensed .32-caliber pistol—at the time of his arrest.
Forensic teams and scientific investigation units were deployed to analyze the crime scene, gather ballistics evidence, and reconstruct the precise sequence of events leading up to the gunfire. Authorities stated that formal disclosures regarding the identities of all victims will follow full verification procedures. Police interrogation of the suspect continues as investigators work to determine whether the shooting was premeditated.
The shocking violent outbreak has sparked widespread concern among local business owners and commercial tenants along the busy GS Road corridor, prompting calls for stricter monitoring of private firearms and mandatory conflict resolution protocols for commercial property disputes. Municipal authorities and trade associations in Guwahati announced plans to conduct emergency security assessments across local hospitality venues, emphasizing the need for enhanced safety measures to prevent business grievances from devolving into tragic violence.
