CULIACÁN, Mexico — A violent riot erupted inside a high-security correctional facility in Mexico’s strife-torn region, leaving at least 10 inmates dead and several others seriously injured following a fierce clash between rival prison gangs.
The outbreak of violence highlights the persistent security and operational challenges plaguing Mexico's penitentiary system, where overcrowding, contraband smuggling, and institutional control by organized crime networks frequently spark deadly confrontations.
The deadly uprising began during morning hours within one of the facility’s main housing modules. Heavy gunfire and explosions were reported from inside the complex as rival factions fought for territorial dominance over specific sectors of the prison.
Heavy smoke billowed into the sky above the compound, signaling fires intentionally set inside common areas and cells. Reports from local authorities confirmed that inmates utilized smuggled firearms, improvised bladed weapons, and heavy tools during the brawl.
"Security perimeter protocols were breached internally, leading to direct clashes between rival factions," stated a state law enforcement spokesperson. "Tactical forces were mobilized immediately to contain the uprising and regain operational control."
State police officers, National Guard units, and military personnel surrounded the prison perimeter to secure the surrounding neighborhood and prevent potential escapes. Heavily armed tactical units forcefully entered the facility, deploying tear gas and flashbang grenades to restore order across affected wings.
Outside the gates, anxious family members gathered in distress, demanding immediate information regarding the identities of victims and injured relatives as ambulances and forensic vehicles arrived under heavy escort.
By late afternoon, state authorities confirmed that order had been fully restored throughout the penitentiary and an exhaustive sweep for contraband weapons was underway. Forensic teams continue conducting on-site investigations to identify the deceased victims and process the scene.
Human rights organizations and legal experts have reiterated calls for urgent legislative and administrative reforms within the state's prison system, citing chronic overcrowding, understaffing, and structural corruption as key catalysts for recurring prison violence.
