Fukuoka, Japan— One person was hospitalized after a targeted knife assault outside a commuter railway station in Fukuoka on October 22, 2026.
The attack happened at 6:15 p.m. outside the east exit of Hakata Station’s local line, a crowded area with shops and bus stops. Police said a man approached another man from behind, shouted, and stabbed him twice in the upper body, then fled through a side alley toward a taxi stand.
The victim, a man in his 30s, collapsed near a convenience store entrance. Station staff called 110 and pressed towels to the wounds. Commuters formed a loose circle, some filming, others directing ambulances through the crowd. Blood pooled on the pavement beside the ticket gates.
Emergency crews arrived in five minutes. Paramedics found the victim conscious but bleeding heavily from a chest wound. He was taken to Kyushu University Hospital. Doctors listed him as serious but stable after surgery. No other injuries were reported.
Witnesses said the attacker and victim appeared to argue briefly before the stabbing. “He waited near the stairs. When the other man came out, he went straight for him. It was not random,” said a station kiosk worker who saw the assault. “People screamed and ran.”
Fukuoka Prefectural Police cordoned off 30 meters of sidewalk and collected a knife handle, blood samples and CCTV footage from the station and nearby shops. A dog unit searched the alley but did not locate the suspect. Officers are reviewing transit IC card logs for the exit time.
The station remained open, but the east exit was closed for an hour. Commuters were diverted through the north gate, causing delays. Police said the attack appears targeted, not indiscriminate, and that the two men may have known each other.
Detectives have identified a person of interest, a man in a dark cap and gray hoodie seen running east. They have asked the public to share any footage. No arrest has been made.
The investigation continues. The victim remains under police protection in hospital.
