Blazing Inferno: Massive Fire Devastates Chabad Founder’s Visitors Complex in Ukraine

HADIACH, Ukraine — A massive fire ripped through the famous "Rabbeinu HaGadol" pilgrimage and visitor complex in the Ukrainian town of Hadiach, severely destroying the main building and a historic synagogue. The complex is located directly adjacent to the sacred burial site of Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, the 18th-century founder of the global Chabad-Lubavitch Hasidic movement.

The incident, which broke out late Friday night, has devastated one of the most prominent Jewish heritage and pilgrimage sites in Eastern Europe, causing losses already estimated in the millions of dollars.

According to local emergency reports, the blaze erupted shortly before midnight on Friday, July 24, 2026, at approximately 11:36 p.m. Within minutes, intense flames engulfed the central structure of the compound, spreading rapidly through the main synagogue, the professional kitchen, large dining halls, and the hospitality facilities built to accommodate travelers.

Firefighters battled the inferno well into the early hours of Saturday morning. While the central administrative and hospitality hub was almost completely hollowed out by the fire, officials confirmed that, miraculously, no injuries or casualties were reported. Rabbi Shneur Zalman Deitch, the chief rabbi of Hadiach who oversees the complex, was out of town at the time of the disaster.

The exact cause of the catastrophic fire remains under active investigation by Ukrainian authorities. Preliminary assessments from first responders suggest that an electrical short circuit inside the sprawling, decades-old facility may have sparked the blaze.

However, given the site's high profile, investigators are examining all possibilities to completely rule out arson or external interference. Chabad representatives noted that the initial multi-million dollar damage estimate is expected to climb once a formal state engineering examination evaluates the structural integrity of what remains.

The Hadiach cemetery complex stands as the second-largest Jewish prayer and pilgrimage destination in Ukraine, eclipsed only by Uman. Rabbi Shneur Zalman—widely revered as the "Alter Rebbe" or "Ba'al HaTanya" after his seminal theological work—died in 1812 while fleeing Napoleon’s invading armies and was laid to rest in the Poltava region.

Though the town's local Jewish population was entirely wiped out during the Holocaust, and Jewish practice was subsequently suppressed under Soviet rule, the site underwent a massive revival in the early 1990s. The modern "Rabbeinu HaGadol" complex was established nearly twenty years ago to offer safety, ritual baths, and kosher dining to international travelers.

Prior to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the site drew tens of thousands of faithful annually. Despite the ongoing wartime challenges, roughly 10,000 pilgrims from Israel, Europe, and the United States still make the grueling 12-to-15-hour overland journey from the nearest open airports in Moldova each year to pray at the tomb. Community leaders have vowed to rebuild the center to ensure the historic sanctuary remains open to the world.
