DENPASAR, BALI — What began as a routine afternoon in a densely populated neighborhood of East Denpasar erupted into dynamic chaos when a fire broke out at a fireworks storage facility, launching high-powered pyrotechnics over surrounding residential rooftops.
Thick, billowing smoke columns quickly filled the sky as hundreds of pyrotechnic shells ignited simultaneously inside the building. Bright streaks of crimson, gold, and emerald light zipped erratically through the haze, sending loud detonations reverberating across nearby homes and streets.
According to local emergency services and eyewitnesses, the fire erupted at approximately 3:00 PM local time during preparation work inside the facility. Sparks ignited nearby volatile materials, rapidly triggering a chain reaction across stockpiled fireworks boxes.
Panicked residents rushed out of their homes as rogue rockets whistled overhead, showering sparks across tiled rooftops and adjacent power lines.
The fire spread rapidly as flames engulfed the rented assembly site before leaping to a neighboring motorcycle workshop, where engine oil and paint thinners triggered secondary blasts. During the initial explosion, several workers suffered burn injuries and required treatment from emergency medical teams. The adjoining business sustained significant damage, with multiple vehicles and surrounding equipment either heavily damaged or completely destroyed.
The Denpasar Fire and Rescue Department dispatched eight fire trucks and specialist rescue units to the scene. First responders were forced to establish a wide perimeter as unexploded fireworks continued to detonate inside the burning structure.
Fire crews continuously poured high-pressure water onto the surrounding rooftops to cool structural materials and prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent residential blocks. The blaze was brought fully under control after approximately two hours of continuous suppression.
Local authorities have opened an investigation into safety compliance and zoning regulations to determine how commercial pyrotechnic assembly operations were permitted to function within a residential zone.
Meanwhile, community leaders are calling for strict oversight and immediate audits of similar industrial spaces across the city to prevent another dangerous disaster in closely packed neighborhoods.
