DINGBOCHE, Nepal — A major fire broke out at a prominent lodge along the primary trekking route to Mount Everest Base Camp on Friday morning, completely destroying one of the high-altitude settlement's popular teahouses.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:00 a.m. local time at Hotel Good Luck, situated at an elevation of roughly 4,410 meters (14,468 feet) in the village of Dingboche within the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality.
Authorities and emergency personnel suspect the blaze was triggered by a cooking gas cylinder explosion in the hotel's kitchen area. The fire quickly engulfed the 17-room timber structure, as the heavy reliance on wooden materials—commonly used throughout the region for insulation against extreme high-altitude cold—caused the flames to spread rapidly.
The situation was further compounded by adverse weather conditions. Dingboche was experiencing heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures, which severely hindered initial firefighting efforts by local residents, guides, and trekking staff.
"Extinguishing the fire was nearly impossible due to the gas cylinders inside and how fast the wooden structure caught fire. We could do nothing but watch as it burned to the ground," noted trekking guide Arjun Gurung.
Despite the rapid spread of the fire and challenging environment, all guests, trekkers, and hotel staff were evacuated safely without any reported injuries or casualties.
Emergency responders and locals successfully contained the scene to prevent the flames from spreading to neighboring lodges and structures in the tightly packed village.
Dingboche serves as a crucial stopover point for trekkers and mountaineers who spend multiple days in the village to acclimatize before pushing higher toward Mount Everest Base Camp or Lobuche.
Due to the heavy snowfall accompanying the incident, movement along the trail has been temporarily restricted, leaving several trekking groups grounded in Dingboche while awaiting clearer weather. Local police officials confirmed that formal investigations into the exact cause of the fire and total property loss are ongoing.
