NEW CAIRO, Egypt — A major fire broke out inside a clothing store on Al-Quba Street in the busy Roksi area, causing extensive property damage and sparking panic among nearby shoppers and business owners.
The incident occurred during peak operating hours, as smoke began billowing from the establishment, rapidly filling the bustling commercial corridor.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire originated inside the store's main inventory area before quickly consuming racks of clothing and commercial displays. Highly flammable fabrics allowed the flames to spread rapidly throughout the interior, generating thick clouds of smoke that spilled onto Al-Quba Street.
Pedestrians and workers from adjacent shops evacuated the immediate area as local shopkeepers attempted to suppress the initial flames using portable fire extinguishers before emergency services arrived.
Civil Defense units, accompanied by multiple fire engines and ambulances, responded swiftly to the emergency calls, closing off sections of the street to establish a safe cordon and combat the blaze. Firefighters worked for over an hour to contain the inferno, deploying high-pressure hoses to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring retail stores and upper-level residential apartments.
Medical teams stationed on-site treated several individuals for minor smoke inhalation, though no severe casualties or fatalities were reported during the initial containment operations.
Police personnel secured the perimeter to control crowd gatherings and divert vehicular traffic away from the affected block, ensuring uninterrupted access for emergency service vehicles.
Following the complete extinguishing of the fire, technical experts and forensic teams entered the premises to initiate cooling operations and conduct a preliminary investigation into the root cause of the incident.
While official findings are pending, authorities suspect an electrical short circuit within the store's wiring or lighting systems may have triggered the blaze. Civil Defense officials have reiterated the importance of regular safety inspections and fire suppression systems in commercial establishments across the district.
