A quiet residential neighborhood turned into a scene of urgent emergency response as a fire broke out in a Housing & Development Board (HDB) residential block in Choa Chu Kang. The blaze prompted a swift evacuation of approximately 200 residents, while emergency responders rushed two individuals to the hospital due to smoke inhalation.
Dark, thick smoke quickly filled the upper-floor corridors of the building, prompting immediate panic and warnings among neighbors. Sirens signaled the arrival of Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) firefighters and police officers, who quickly coordinated a safe, orderly evacuation down the stairwells. Around 200 occupants from surrounding units were gathered at an open area at the base of the block to ensure their safety while firefighters tackled the source of the fire.
Equipped with breathing apparatus, SCDF emergency personnel deployed water jets inside the affected apartment to extinguish the flames and stop them from spreading to neighboring units. During the search operation, two residents suffering from smoke inhalation received initial medical care from SCDF paramedics on scene before being conveyed to the hospital for treatment. No additional injuries or fatalities were reported.
Preliminary assessments suggest the fire caused significant damage to the living space of the primary unit, alongside heat and soot damage along the exterior corridor walls. Authorities remain on site conducting forensic checks to determine the root cause of the incident. Local community representatives are assisting affected families with temporary accommodations and immediate basic needs.
As news of the incident spread, residents from nearby blocks gathered to offer food, water, and support to those forced to leave their homes in the middle of the emergency. Grassroots volunteers and community centers immediately mobilized to set up temporary rest areas, providing basic amenities, medical check-ins, and emotional support to vulnerable or elderly residents. Neighboring households opened their doors to assist affected families, underscoring the strong community bond during times of crisis.
