Blast Near Lebanese Border Leaves at Least 12 Hikers Injured

UPPER GALILEE — A scenic outdoor excursion turned into a scene of panic and destruction on Monday afternoon, October 12, 2026 after an unexpected explosion along Israel's northern border with Lebanon injured at least 12 hikers, including children and teachers.

The blast occurred around 2:53 p.m. near Mitzpe Pe'er, a popular lookout point along the Ramim Ridge in the Upper Galilee region.

The Magen David Adom (MDA) emergency service and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) immediately dispatched emergency medical units, intensive care ambulances, and rescue helicopters to the rugged terrain.

First responders treated victims at the scene before initiating air medical evacuations. At least eight individuals sustained serious-to-moderate injuries, while four or more were treated for lighter injuries. To ensure rapid transport to regional trauma centers, military and medical helicopters were deployed alongside field troops to airlift the most severely injured casualties.

While security forces and local police units have launched a full investigation into the precise trigger of the blast, preliminary assessments point toward unexploded ordnance (UXO) remaining in the border zone.

The northern border corridor has seen heavy military activity and exchange of fire over past conflicts, leaving remnant munitions hidden in surrounding trails and brush. Security personnel continue to sweep the immediate area to ensure there are no secondary explosives or immediate tactical threats.

In the wake of the explosion, community representatives and safety advocates expressed growing outrage over the persistent threat posed by unexploded ordnance in accessible recreational zones. Local authorities face mounting pressure to expand warning signage, erect clearer barriers, and conduct systematic mine-clearing operations along high-traffic hiking trails to prevent future tragedies.

Meanwhile, regional medical centers reported that all hospitalized victims are currently in stable condition as military specialists finish securing the site. Government officials have urged residents and visitors to strictly avoid off-path areas along the northern perimeter until safety teams complete thorough clearance sweeps across the surrounding terrain.
