Houston, United States— Three workers were left severely burned after a massive industrial storage tank exploded and ignited a chemical fire at a plant on October 21, 2025.
The blast hit at 9:15 a.m. during a routine transfer operation. Witnesses said they heard a deep thump, then a sheet of flame rose from the tank farm. A second, smaller explosion followed. Black smoke towered over the industrial park and could be seen for miles.
The tank held a volatile industrial solvent. Plant alarms sounded. Workers ran. Two contractors near the manifold were thrown back by the pressure wave. A third was engulfed while trying to shut a valve. Co-workers dragged him clear.
County fire and hazmat units arrived within 10 minutes and ordered a half-mile evacuation. They found three men with burns to faces, hands and torsos, plus a pool fire spreading toward adjacent tanks. Foam lines were laid. Water was used to cool the neighboring vessels.
“These were experienced operators doing a standard job. Then the pressure spiked. They had seconds,” said a shift supervisor who was outside the blast zone. He said the tank’s pressure relief valve had shown intermittent readings last week.
The injured were taken to a regional burn center. One is listed in critical condition with burns over 60 percent of his body. Two are serious but stable. All three were wearing flame-resistant gear, which officials said likely saved their lives.
Emergency management said air monitoring showed elevated volatile organic compounds downwind but below immediate danger levels. Residents within one mile were told to shelter indoors, close windows, shut off HVAC. Schools kept children inside for two hours.
OSHA and the Chemical Safety Board have opened investigations. The plant’s logs, pressure sensors and maintenance records for the past six months have been secured. A company statement said, “We are focused on our people and cooperating fully. Operations in that unit are suspended.”
The fire burned for almost four hours before it was declared under control. The tank is destroyed. The evacuation order has been lifted, but the site remains locked.
