Birrong Assault Case: Police Charge 22-Year-Old After CCTV Device Used As Weapon

Bankstown, Australia—Police apprehended a man early Tuesday morning after a violent struggle at a home in Birrong. The incident started around 1am on Wellington Road. Officers from the Bankstown Police Area Command arrived to find a scene of destruction.

A 50-year-old man reported being attacked by a 22-year-old acquaintance. The younger man allegedly ripped two CCTV cameras from the exterior of the house. He then used one of the devices as a weapon.

The victim suffered facial injuries during the blunt force attack. Paramedics treated him at the scene. He did not require a trip to the hospital, according to official reports.

The suspect did not stop at the physical assault. Witnesses told police he walked to a nearby car to retrieve a jerry can. He returned to the front of the home with the container.

He poured accelerant across the entrance of the property. The man then attempted to ignite the liquid. The fire did not take hold as intended by the attacker.

Officers arrested the 22-year-old at the address before he could cause further damage. He was taken to Bankstown Police Station for processing. The speed of the response likely prevented a total loss of the home.

The suspect now faces serious charges including assault causing actual bodily harm. He is also charged with attempting to damage property by fire. Police also added two counts of stalking with intent to cause fear.

The accused was refused bail. He is scheduled to appear in Bankstown Local Court today. Detectives are still reviewing the evidence recovered from the street and the home.
