Beyond Permits and Paths: What a City’s Zoo Teaches Us About Guardianship and Harmony

In the quiet corridors of a zoo long woven into the heart of Bandung’s urban rhythm, a sudden silence now hangs where once the roars, calls, and rustling of animal life mingled with curious voices. Like a garden left to pause in the stillness of a late afternoon, Bandung Zoo has entered a moment of transition — a pause compelled not by whim but by a careful reckoning with duty and care. At the center of this shift is a decision by the Ministry of Forestry that reaches beyond routine administration into the delicate balance between governance and guardianship of our shared natural heritage.

On Thursday, the Ministry of Forestry officially revoked the management permit of the Yayasan Margasatwa Tamansari (YMT), the conservation body that had overseen Bandung Zoo for years, citing concerns about animal welfare and the need for professional stewardship. The ministry’s directive reflects a growing awareness that administrative challenges must not become a burden borne by the animals themselves.

Director General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation, Satyawan Pudiyatmoko, explained the decision as part of a broader effort to protect and care for all creatures in the zoo’s care. For up to three months, the ministry will assume full responsibility to ensure the wellbeing of these animals, while actively seeking a new management team with expertise and standards aligned with animal welfare.

In the wake of the revocation, the Bandung City Government took steps to secure the zoo’s grounds. Satpol PP (Municipal Police) officers now maintain a 24‑hour presence to guard regional assets and ensure that the animals are safely looked after amidst the transition, underscoring the seriousness with which local authorities regard this responsibility.

The scene at the zoo reflects both caution and care. Access gates remain sealed, not in exclusion, but in careful coordination to protect the site and its residents. A single passage remains open to allow caretakers and veterinary staff to continue essential work.

For many in West Java, the Bandung Zoo has been more than a place of leisure; it was an educational ground where generations learned about biodiversity and the wonders of the natural world. Its status as regional property (BMD) adds layers of stewardship not just to national officials but to the community that cherishes it.

This move from the ministry follows months of discussions and public interest in the zoo’s future — including previous appeals by local leaders asking for a reevaluation of management approaches.

In gentle news terms, the ministry’s revocation marks a key moment in the ongoing evolution of wildlife care and institutional responsibility in Indonesia. With animals now under direct state care and joint efforts underway between national and local authorities to find capable new management, the focus remains clear: safeguarding the wellbeing of every creature within Bandung Zoo’s walls. As the transition unfolds, the coming weeks will determine the next chapter for one of West Java’s most familiar faces in conservation and public space.
