Its wide landscapes, cool climate, energy resources, and relatively sparse population are attracting technology companies and investors searching for locations capable of supporting enormous data centers.
The region has drawn attention as artificial intelligence drives demand for computing infrastructure around the world. Data centers require large amounts of electricity as well as reliable cooling, making places with abundant energy and naturally lower temperatures increasingly attractive to developers.
Neuquén, in Patagonia, has emerged as one of the areas receiving the strongest interest. Energy company Pampa Energía is studying a facility near its Loma de la Lata power plant that could eventually consume as much as 500 megawatts of electricity, with nearby Vaca Muerta providing access to shale gas resources.
The attraction is not simply about having land. Patagonia offers a combination of energy sources, cooler temperatures, and large open spaces. Those conditions can help reduce some of the costs associated with operating facilities filled with servers and specialized cooling equipment.

The Vaca Muerta shale formation has become a major component of the country’s energy development, while parts of Patagonia also possess significant wind and hydroelectric potential. For data center developers, access to multiple sources of power can be an important consideration when planning large facilities.
Interest is also spreading beyond Neuquén. Projects have been discussed in Chubut and Buenos Aires province, with proposed facilities ranging from smaller initial installations to projects that could eventually reach several hundred megawatts or more. Some proposals are still at an early stage and require financing, infrastructure, and formal agreements before construction can begin.
Connectivity remains one of the challenges. Data centers are not isolated warehouses of computers; they depend on fast and reliable connections to users and other digital infrastructure. Argentina is therefore working to improve fiber-optic connectivity, including plans for additional cable landing infrastructure that could make Patagonia more attractive to international operators.
For Argentina, the interest represents a possible meeting point between its natural resources and the digital economy. Patagonia has long been associated with mountains, winds, deserts, and distant horizons. Now, alongside those landscapes, a new possibility is emerging: a region where energy and computing infrastructure could become part of the same economic story.
