Between Water and Electricity: Dutch Data Centers Face New Questions About the Resources Behind Digital Growth

The digital world can feel weightless. A video begins with a tap, a document appears instantly, and an online service responds within seconds. Behind that apparent simplicity, however, are buildings filled with servers, cooling equipment, cables, and systems that consume substantial amounts of electricity and, in some cases, water.

Data centers in the Netherlands are facing increasing questions about their resource consumption as digital infrastructure continues to expand. The country's role as a European technology and connectivity hub has brought more attention to the physical infrastructure supporting the online economy.

Electricity is one of the most visible requirements. Servers operate continuously, while cooling systems work to prevent equipment from overheating. As computing demand grows, especially through artificial intelligence and cloud services, the amount of processing power required by some facilities can increase significantly.

Water can also become part of the equation. Certain cooling systems use water to remove heat from computer equipment, creating another resource consideration for communities and regulators.

The issue becomes more complex because data centers provide infrastructure for a wide range of services. Cloud storage, online commerce, financial technology, communications, streaming platforms, and artificial-intelligence applications all depend on computing capacity somewhere in the network.

The Netherlands has developed a strong digital infrastructure sector partly because of its geographic position and extensive telecommunications connections. Amsterdam and surrounding areas have become important locations for data centers serving European markets.

But digital growth creates physical questions. Where should new facilities be built? How much electricity can the local grid provide? Is sufficient water available for cooling? How can facilities operate while reducing environmental pressures?

Operators have increasingly explored alternatives, including more efficient cooling technologies, renewable electricity, heat reuse, and designs intended to reduce resource consumption.

Artificial intelligence has added another layer to the discussion. AI workloads can require significant computing resources, meaning demand for data-center capacity may increase as companies and institutions adopt more advanced models.

The debate therefore extends beyond individual buildings. It concerns how a modern economy allocates electricity, water, land, and infrastructure while continuing to expand digital services.

The cloud may remain invisible to most users, but the buildings behind it are firmly rooted in the physical world. In the Netherlands, the growing presence of data centers is making that connection harder to overlook: every digital service has an infrastructure beneath it, and that infrastructure has a measurable footprint.
